Taco Tuesdays with a TWIST! April 25, 2013

My family loves tacos and has them at least once a week.  I recently heard that Papa Murphy’s Take and Bake Pizza has a Taco Grande pizza for a limited time.  This past Tuesday, we picked up a beef and chicken Taco Grande pizza and a couple of Mini-Murph kits for my little ones to put a twist on our Taco Tuesdays.  The Mini-murph kits are personal size pizzas, that come with all the supplies that your kids need to make their own pizza…and they are only $3.oo! We also got a bucket of cookie dough for dessert. Dinner and dessert for a family of 5 for under $30 and it was hot and fresh out of the oven.

I was surprised at how much the pizza tasted like a taco, pleasantly surprised!  It really does taste like a taco and so much easier to eat than a traditional taco.  The large size pizza is $10 and I don’t know about you, but it cost me a lot more than $10.oo to make traditional homemade tacos, so at that price, it’s worth a taste test.  The Taco Grande pizza is only around for a limited time, so try it while you have a chance!

If you are in Lawrence, KS area, there is a new store and you have a chance to celebrate their grand opening!  The store is located on 650 Congressional Drive.  A grand opening celebration is set for May 2-4, featuring family friendly games, activities and giveaways. On Saturday, May 4, the first 100 people through the new Lawrence location will receive coupons for a free large pepperoni pizza (one per family) starting at 10 a.m.

I have always been a fan of Papa Murphy’s and turns out I’m in good company!

  • Papa Murphy’s also ranked #1 pizza chain in the 2013 Consumer Picks survey by Nation’s Restaurant News and WD Partners, a global strategy firm.
  • Papa Murphy’s ranked #3 overall, way ahead of all other pizza franchises, including Papa John’s (ranked 46), Pizza Hut (ranked 65), Domino’s (ranked 76) and Little Caesars (ranked 88).

Now, you can TWIST your Taco Tuesday too!

Help with Portion Control March 27, 2013

Losing weight is simple.  More calories out, fewer calories in.  Sounds easy enough, but what if you are overeating and don’t know it?  Seems a lot of people have trouble with portions and if you don’t know the correct portions, chances are you are teaching your children the wrong portions.  I am trying to lose weight, but also make a lifestyle change.  I have not gone on any crash diets or systems, I am just wanting to eat everything I love, but in the right portions .

For the past couple of weeks, I have had this on my kitchen counter…and it is so helpful!

lifesizeportions

What is it?  Life size Portion Control System.  Each measuring tools has a marked letter for the amount of each type of food you are supposed to have.  For example, the large round cup marked with a “C” is for carbs.  There are tools to measure everything you are eating and it has a guide to tell you what foods go with them.  They measure dairy, topping, goodies, meats, saucy dishes, baked good, carbs and even liquids!   It is so much easier than a food scale.  Yes, a scale helps you measure the amount, but a scale won’t tell you the amount of each you are supposed to eat.

lifesize1

The system includes a chart, DVD guides and a 30 day, money back guarantee.  If you are wanting to learn to eat the correct  portions or teach your children the correct portions, this is a fun way to do it.  The snacks I give my children the past couple of weeks, have been measured out with the measuring cups.  They think it’s fun and I know they are not overeating anything.

Fitness Update & Give Away! March 6, 2013

I was all prepared to just re-blog last months fitness update about the numbers not moving and it sucking, BUT THEN….I saw some pics that were taken last summer.  The pictures weren’t supposed to be of me, because I usually avoid pictures at all cost or only take them from the chest up!  These were taken by my friend Andrea, while we were at Crown Center watching our kids play in the fountains.  I was shocked to see me standing in the back ground and even more shocked at how fat & just plain out of shape I looked!  I have always been “thick” so size and the number on the scale has never been my issue, but I want to look toned and in shape…no matter what size I am or how much I weigh.   I think it’s working, it’s just taking time.  The summer pics were taken in June 2012, I started working out in October 2012.  After seeing those summer pics, I snapped a picture before I went on air to do my Fox 4 segment  (on March 4, 2013) and I CAN see the difference.  It’s not huge, but it’s a noticeable difference.  It’s a little motivation to keep going to the gym, watch my portions and what I’m eating.

Give Away: If you live in the Johnson Country area, this give away is for you! I have been working out at 68 Inside Sports and I love it there.  It’s big enough to have everything I need, lots of equipment and classes; but small enough that I don’t feel lost.  I am giving away a 1 month membership and 3 group training sessions!  Take a look at some of the classes and info about the gym at www.68insidesports.com You can pick which ever group you want, but I strongly recommend my trainer, Kelli! To enter, just leave a comment in the blog comment with your email address (I won’t send you crap emails) and you will be entered to win.  The winner will be chosen through www.random.org and announced on March 30th, 2013.

This Month Sucks! (Fitness Update) February 11, 2013

I started not to do a blog and skip this month, but I am doing it and telling the whole truth! This month sucks! This month, I understand why people quit, give up and have to start over. I’ve been busy, I had a couple of sick kids and both things really threw off my motivation and routine. It’s hard to go workout or cook a healthy meal when you are cleaning up puke and washing everything in your house!
After you skip a week, it would be really easy to say screw it, but I’m not!

I have yet to reach any major goals and I know that has more to do with my eating habits then anything else. I feel like things are less giggly and tighter, but no weight loss this month. I am definitely stronger, because I did the monkey bars while playing at the park with my kids and who knows how long it’s been since I did that.

I also see how easy it was for me to gain 2 pounds a month….half a pound here and there. putting all my food intake into my fitness pal is a really easy way to see how the fast food and bad choices can really creep up and before you know it, you are  50 pounds  over weight!

Hoping next month will be better, I am going to revise my food and see if I can get some weight to drop. I am also signed up for a 5k in April, so I’m guessing, I better start running more that 3 minutes on the treadmill!

“Stairs Don’t Count” ! (fitness update 3) January 13, 2013

Filed under: Fitness Journey — Mikita Burton AKA Never Home SAHM @ 2:34 AM

Yes, you read it right.  Stairs don’t count…atleast they don’t in Kelli’s world (my trainer-read about her here: http://wp.me/p1G6ZC-4Q ).  She sends me up to the track (4 flights of stairs), back down to her (2 flights) and down to a machine (2 more flights).  In all of that jogging up and down stairs, she doesn’t count as part of my workout, just a way to get from 1 place to the next!!!  CRAZY! It’s working, but I still think it’s crazy!

I have discovered the www.myfitnesspal.com app/computer program.  I love it!  You enter your food and exercise for the day, you also imput your current and goals and it gives you a base of what you should be eating.  It gives you the option to lose 1/2 to 2 pounds per week and gives you a calorie goal.  I love that all you have to do it search your food, even fast food or Starbucks coffee and it finds it, adds the calories.  It’s a great way to see how much you are eating.  I know there are several apps like it, so far I like this one the best.  Even if you are not exercising right now, you can still see what’s going in.  It’s free and if you don’t have a smart phone, you can do it online too.  It’s encouraging to complete your daily food and then it tells you “if you keep eating like this, you will weigh__________ in 5 weeks”!

I have had more wardrobe casualties and I’ve had a few people notice the inches coming off and that’s all very encouraging. For the first time in more than 13 years, was able to buy tall boots!!! My legs have always been big and muscular, but it has been a very long time since they fit in a tall boot…they do now!!! Wahoooooo! Here are a few pics of my “so far” progress!

I did slice my finger open cutting mushrooms for my salad!  I never cut my finger opening a Reese’s Peanut butter Cup!  Oh, well, I survived!

I have NOT found my inner runner, I am not sure I have one….I will keep looking for her!

2 Month – Fitness Update ~ slow and steady wins the race! December 17, 2012

I have officially been working out with  my trainer Kelli, for 2 months!  I didn’t quit – Wahooo!!!! I am past the “it’s not worth it” and “it’s taking too long phase”.  I am on to the it’s working slowly and the keep it up phase!

I am happy to report that the numbers are changing, by changing, I mean going down! Not huge drops, more like a half pound to a pound a week.  Which any professional weight-loss person will tell you is good and that 2 pounds a week is the most you should shoot for and that’s it’s the best shot to maintain your weight loss goals.

My clothes are getting big, I’ve had a few wardrobe casulties….like my favorite pair of Old Navy cropped sweat pants are WAYYY to big and fall off! A brand new skirt, that I bought in September, still has the tag on it and won’t ever be worn.  That is okay, I am willing to replace those in a smaller size!

The biggest change, is the fat on my face!  The first is a pic from my niece’s wedding in May and the other is from 12/13/12 from my Christmas party.  It’s amazing what a little hard work can do.  I’m still on a mission and have not reached any major goals, but I’m a work in progress!
